Chemicals in skincare and switching to organic products

Chemicals in skincare and switching to organic products

There are lots of harmful chemicals to be found in skincare, and switching to organic products can ensure that you keep your skin safe from these harsh ingredients. The benefits of using organic ingredients are endless, and they contain essential oils that have a wealth of properties which help to nourish the skin too.

Dangerous chemicals in beauty products

A lot of the time, we’re cautious about the food we’re putting into our bodies, but considering what we’re putting onto our skin is just as important. The quantities of harmful chemicals found in many skincare products are quite shocking. Here are just a few examples of chemicals you might spot on ingredients labels, and the damage that they can cause to your skin and overall health:

Parabens - Found in a huge number of beauty creams, parabens are used as preservatives and help to stop the growth of bacteria, mould, and yeast. They come in different forms, including butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben, methylparaben, or propylparaben, and are one of the most widely used chemicals in beauty products. However, they’ve been known to contribute to cancerous tumours - particularly in females - making them an ingredient to avoid.

Phthalates - Phthalates are difficult to spot in cosmetic products because the majority of the time they are labelled simply as “fragrance”. Originally used to soften plastics, this chemical is now used in a range of beauty products, including fragranced body lotion for uneven skin tone, body washes, and derma hair products. Worryingly, phthalates are known to be a hormone disruptor and have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer too.

Alcohol - Beauty products which list alcohol as the main ingredient are usually problematic. SD, denatured, and isopropyl alcohol have the ability to give the skin a quick-drying finish, as well as decreasing it. Whilst these alcohol-based products may seem like quick fixes for a number of issues, the long term consequences are detrimental and include drying out the skin and stripping it of its natural layer. Products that are alcohol-based are particularly attractive to people who suffer from oily skin, but eventually, these products can make the skin even greasier, in addition to enlarging bumps and pores.

Synthetic Colours - Just like artificial food colouring, many skincare products also contain synthetic colours. Whilst they may look enticing and pretty, they’re bad news for your skin. Synthetic colours are understood to cause skin irritations, ADHD in children, and can even contribute to causing cancer. On product labelling, you’ll see synthetic colours labelled as ‘colourant’ or CI 26100, F&DC 6 and Red 1. Organic products get their colouring from natural ingredients such as plants and herbs, so there aren’t any artificial additives that can cause irritations or health problems.
